Chelmsford 2nd XV found themselves travelling down the A12 to play Brentwood at King George's Playing Fields in their first away game of the season. A strong side was looking to play expansive rugby with three backs having played in the first team in recent weeks.
With discipline and a front foot rugby approach being spoken about before the game, the visitors found themselves down to 14 men due to a deliberate knock on after only 5 minutes. With no full back the defence was stretched and Brentwood scored the first try of the game. Brentwood 7 Chelmsford 0.
With Jimmy Allway back on the pitch, the power of the backs started to pay dividends. Ash Toomey scored a classic interception try, Ross Toomey scored a dynamic brace and James Gadd showed his balance and power to touch down. Matt Jefferson was accurate with the boot to make the half time score Brentwood 7 Chelmsford 28.
Now playing down the slope, on a well prepared pitch, Chelmsford needed to concentrate and be clinical. Ash Toomey was up to his normal tricks scoring another interception try and James Gadd scored his second try. Brentwood 7 Chelmsford 38.
At this stage in the game the referee was penalising the Blueboy's for a number of infringements and a Brentwood tap penalty saw the Brentwood prop go over for their second try. Chelmsford however scored the final try of the game with Danish international, Marcus Borup popping up in the centres to glide over. A good solid performance from the Blueboy's but at least 20 points were left out on the paddock! Brentwood 12 Chelmsford 45.
