Chelmsford 2nd XV played Westcliff 2nd XV on Armistice Day having witnessed a good victory by the Bluebirds against Chobham Ladies in the morning. The sun was out and the pitch was firm. All the attributes needed for a free flowing game of rugby.
Playing down the slope in the first half the young visiting Westcliff side looked eager to move the ball across their backline and were the first to score. Chelmsford 0 Westcliff 5. This shook the Blueboys into action and after last weeks brace, Ash Toomey again went over with a powerful dive to the line. The extra points were converted by Matt Jefferson. Chelmsford 7 Westcliff 5.
At this point the game ebbed and flowed as Chelmsford tried to gain some dominance at both scrum and line-out. James Gadd was finding space in the centre and he darted over for the second score. Chelmsford 14 Westcliff 5. A try before half time by ex Brentwood speedster Saulage Hubert created some breathing space as the half time score read Chelmsford 21 Westcliff 5.
The Westcliff side however had a great attitude and 21-5 soon became 21-17 and a never say die attitude. The game was finely balanced and the next score would be crucial. Harrison Thomas, freshly back from his Australian adventure, crashed over and there was again breathing distance between the two sides. Chelmsford 28 Westcliff 17.
A fourth converted try by Westcliff and an unconverted try by Ross Toomey saw the final score Chelmsford 35 Westcliff 24. A below par performance by the Blueboys shows just what standards are now expected. Bring on Harlow next weekend!
