Bluebirds secure gritty win on the road

The Bluebirds travelled to Chesham on the back of the disappointment of conceding a walkover the week before with a good size squad for an away fixture against a team that beat them twice last season. In blustery conditions the ladies in pink and blue started well, putting pressure on Chesham from the starting whistle and when Brenda Stubar gloriously kicked a loose ball from inside her own half, it was chased down and kicked twice further by Marcys 'MJ' Jackowska who touched it down for the Bluebirds first try within 4 minutes.

With the weather playing a big factor, a disturbingly high number of stoppages by the referee and numerous scrums and turnovers of possession meant few scoring opportunities until the 27th minute when Chesham went over for their first and only try of the game to level the scores at 5-5. The Bluebirds hit straight back though and with 30 mins gone and a penalty in front of the post, Vice Captain Jess Matthews stepped up to confidently slot the ball between the posts to give the Bluebirds and 8-5 lead. The Bluebirds were then down to 14 for the last 5 mins of the half with a yellow card for a high tackle but some stout defence meaning no further scores. Half time Chesham 5-8 Bluebirds.

The second half started with the Bluebirds still down to 14 but that didn't stop them coming out the blocks quickly with Jess Matthews completing a well worked team try to give the Bluebirds a 5-13 lead. The rest of the game saw some resolute defending from both sides, but no further points added, with tempers running high at times and both sides discipline around the breakdown being questioned by the referee, the Bluebirds once again showed how they can keep sides from scoring in the second half of a game. A deserved win for the Bluebirds who are next back in action on Ladies Day on 2nd November at Coronation Park. Please come and show your support, tickets for the lunch are available on the website, and if you would like to sponsor part of the Ladies Day at which the new Ladies Captains Board is being presented please get in touch.
