ALFRED JOHN SMITH
16th February 1944 – 29th March 2022
John Smith, also known as “AJ” was a true cockney and spent his early years in East London. He had to leave school early, after his father died, and joined the print trade, joining the Union and eventually becoming Father of the Chapel. This caused some light-hearted banter when he played against Met Police, as he was a leading voice on the picket line at the Wapping Dispute of 1986.
His rugby career started with Upper Clapton, where he learnt the skills of being a prop. He joined Chelmsford for a spell in the early 1970s, before spending time in Guernsey. On his return to the mainland he joined Rochford, before returning to Chelmsford and eventually becoming captain of the 2nd XV in 1979. In 1983 he took over captaincy of the Undertakers until their disbandment in 1986, which included leading the team in the Golden Oldies Tournament of 1985. He was a member of many club tours, including Canada.
After hanging up his boots, John continued to support the club and was a regular spectator at 1st XV games, both home and away, and was rewarded with the honour of Honorary Vice President.
Sadly in 2003 he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s, which curtailed his involvement with the club to some extent. He will be sadly missed by all those who came in contact with him. R.I.P.
