CHELMSFORD RUGBY CLUB WISH DAVID SAULL OF WOODFORD RUGBY CLUB A SPEEDY RECOVERY

Eddie Gooby3 Oct 2017 - 13:11

This game gave us a lot to think about . We are losing Marcus Pottinger for a month (pictured) due to work commitments in Australia

Woodford 52 Chelmsford 17
London North East 2
Chelmsford travelled to Woodford on Saturday for their fourth league game of the season seeking their first win of this campaign. The game started with Woodford attacking but within ten minutes the game was stopped so an air ambulance helicopter could land on the pitch to attend a spectator who became ill. The game was delayed for forty minutes but it was Woodford who started much more quickly, when they took a scrum against the head before the Woodford centre burst through under the posts.
As in previous weeks lineouts were very much a lottery for Chelmsford and ball retention was often poor. It was from an interception when Chelmsford were on the attack, that Woodford scored their second converted try. The ball was given away inside the Woodford twenty two metres and with only two passes, they ran the length of the pitch.
It was not all oneway traffic and Ben Bayley, who had a particularly good game, reduced the defecit to 14 =3. Shortly afterwards Zain Manan, playing at flyhalf, showed his ability by sidestepping three of the opposition before putting the ball down under the posts.
For a brief period it looked as if Chelmsford were back in the game but poor tackling around the fringes allowed the Woodford number 8 to score a simple try to make the half time score 21-10
As the second half progressed the number of tackles being missed increased and the problem Chelmsford have had this season dealing with catch and drive from five metre lineouts brought about the next two tries for Woodford
During the first hour of the game the number of injuries had its effect, with Cunnah, Richards and Pottinger all leaving the field. Chelmsford did score a good try when Sid Hoult popped the ball for Will Ferrier to burst onto to run in under the posts to make it 33-17.
The last quarter of an hour saw Woodford in total ascendancy scoring three further tries. The Chelmsford forwards never won enough consistent ball from either the scrum or the lineout and as the game progressed the tackling became ragged. Final score 52=17
Eddie Gooby DOR said after the game
Events of the day bought everything into perspective. The game was held up after 15 mins due to a Woodford member who turn out to be a friend of mine collapsed and had to me revived
The true hero of the day was our physio Jemma Pemberton who helped bring him back to life. Jemma joined us in the summer and she's been a fantastic addition to the club
The game itself after a 1hrs delay was a disaster within 15 mins of the restart we lost two players with a pulled hamstring and a dislocated shoulder
Plus two further injuries to Alex Ellis and Marcus Pottinger
In patches we played some really good rugby that kept us in the game up to 60 minute mark but once again we fell off to many tackles and allowed the opposition to play on the front foot
We need to re group this week for another tough game
It's time we all stand up and play to our full potential
Unfortunately we are going to have to make more changes with Two players going away for a month or more a few injuries and availabilities
It's know over to the players we can not feel sorry for ourselves it's the situation we are in and have to deal with it
Next week Chelmsford entertain Harlow kick off at Coronation Park 3.00pm
