Match Report - Chelmsford 1st XV 16 v Eton Manor 21

Rob Evans27 Nov 2022 - 15:07

Anglia Regional 2

This was an entertaining match,Chelmsford took on one of the top sides in the league and came within less than a minute of securing victory. The match was played under sunny skies and good conditions and both sides tried to play an expansive game at a high speed. The game began at pace with aggressive tackling and hard running from both sides. Chelmsford went 3-0 up after ten minutes when Harry Moseley kicked a penalty. Harry kicked well all afternoon, getting good service from Ben Bayley. Chelmsford stretched their lead further when Jack Acorn sprinted to score in the corner following some excellent back play. This try was his hundredth for the club, only the second player to reach this number in the history of the club.
Eton Manor came back on the attack, Chelmsford’s defence was solid and aggressive, with many bone crunching tackles being made. Eton Manor eventually forced a try following a five metre lineout, when their second row broke through from close range to score a converted try. Moseley scored again from a penalty to make the half time score Chelmsford 11 Eton Manor 7.
With Chelmsford playing up the slope, it seemed that Eton Manor might have ‘run away’ with the game as they took the lead with two successive penalties, well struck by their talented fly half. Chelmsford were, however, still playing with verve and aggression and retook the lead following excellent inter passing between both backs and forwards. The ball eventually got to second row Frankie Hart, who had little room and men to get passed. He drove forward taking tacklers with and stretched out to put the ball over the line in the corner.
The game was in the balance, with both side striving for the win, probably at this stage Chelmsford gave away too many penalties, which allowed Eton Manor to kick deep into the Chelmsford half. With less than a minute to go Eton Manor gained a five metre scrum and after some confusion Eton Manor were awarded a penalty try for an offence during the scrummage. There was hardly time to restart before the whistle was blown for full time.
Although the game was lost, both the players and coaching staff should take credit for the standard of rugby shown and the progress which has been made since last season. There is no game next Saturday and the next game is on the 26th November away at Southend kick off 2.15pm
