First forray in to the world of 7s Rugby

Saturday saw a first forray for the Blueboys in to the world of 7s Rugby and the first competitive action since their league winning win versus Campion in early March 2020.

With an athletic and skillful squad selected there was plenty to be optimistic about. This optimism was well placed as it was clear from the first pool game that the squad had a good shout of doing well in the compeition. With all 3 sides in group D of the mens social competition dispatched, the boys scoring freely and conceeding just 3 tries, it was onwards in to the quarter finals.

The Bluboys faced a competitive squad called Rum'ns. However, The boys picked up where they left off in the pool games, getting over the whitewash numerous times with heaps of power and flair, and the game finished 50-5.

It was then on to the semis where the Blueboys got their first glimpse of a team also promoted to London 2 last year, old foes Cantabrians. It was clear from the offset that the Cantabs team offered a more physical and stern test, but the boys went up a gear, coming away 21-14 winners with smiles on faces all round.

On to the final where they faced 7s specialists Natureboys. With the Blueboys down to the bare bones and with Nature boys with plenty of fresh legs, this proved a match too far. However, a superb team try for the Blueboys kept the team in with a shout of glory going in to the closing seconds of the game. Alas the clock ran down, and the game finished 14-10 to the Natureboys with just the two conversions by the opposition making the difference.

Three players made their senior debuts for the club. Ronan Kelly made his long awaited debut since finishing colts rugby last year. Ronan was superb throughout the tournament and played more minutes than most players. His tough tackling and skills with the ball making him a handful for the oppositions faced. Alex Adams still technically a colt, but having recently turned 18 had a fantastic first run out in senior rugby. A tough compeitior, Alex had a big impact during his time on the pitch and picked up a couple of tries to boot! Jude Thorne, a 200m sprinter, and ideal for 7s was looking good, ripping up defences in the pool games before a heavy tackle ended his day with a bang to his shoulder. Jude also impressed on the bus ride home, completing his initiations without an issue. Jamie Ash and Jimmy Allway finished joint top try scorers, with Jack Acorn and Kieran 'Meatball' Reeeve getting pipped with Ash and Allways 6 a piece to Acorn and Meatballs 5 trys. Whilst there were some fantastically skillfull performances it was the dogged work of Marc Pluck that saw him marked as MVP. He played more minutes than any other player and his tough tackling and breakdown work provided numerous opportunities for the pace men in the squad to finish off.

All in all, a surperb day out for the Blueboys.
