This was a comprehensive victory for the Essex side who had lost heavily in the away fixture to Norwich in September. Certainly, Norwich were stronger in September, but Chelmsford despite a number of absences through injury are now a much more formidable outfit.
Playing down the slope, but against the breeze, Chelmsford consistently applied pressure and it was just a matter of time before they broke through. Scott James, on the burst, rampaged his way through in the centre to score for Matt Jefferson to convert. Jefferson converted five of the tries scored during the game. Scott James, on the other hand, saw little further action due to an injury a few minutes after his try.
Norwich came back into the game briefly, when a break by their three quarters brought a well crafted converted try. This was the only time Norwich were in the game. The Chelmsford pack dominated in the scrummage pushing their opposition backwards and disrupting the oppositions ball. It was therefore apt that during the game three tries were scored by the Chelmsford props Ash Browne and Chris Aroyehun. They are both difficult to bring down when on the charge, they scored the second and third try for Chelmsford in the half.
Another improvement this week, was the tactical kicking which brought about the fourth try, scored by ever dangerous Jack Acorn.
Half Time Chelmsford 26 Norwich 7
Norwich were first to score in the second half when a good break, followed by several good linkage passes which cut a hole in the Chelmsford defence. This brief comeback was soon stymied when Aroyehun drove through for his second try. Rhys Salmon, coming on as replacement, then scored with a darting run. The final try was scored by the Chelmsford skipper Josh Cavey, who was the ‘man of the match’ both for his attacking runs and his defensive work.
Chelmsford have their final game of the season next week against HAC. This fixture was abandoned earlier in the season due to bad weather. HAC are a top of the table team, but a win for Chelmsford would see them take seventh position in the league, the highest position reached during this campaign.Kick off 3.00pm Coronation Park
