This was a game which Chelmsford will look back upon and
think they should have won. Credit must be paid to
Stowmarket who showed excellent handling skills and a
readiness to run the ball from all positions and always backed
up their runners supplying a player to receive another off
load.
Chelmsford played down the slope in the first half, as in
previous weeks started slowly. Stowmarket immediately
made inroads, particularly by their No 8, with driving runs
and obtained three points from a well taken penalty. From
the kick off the ball went dead and the Stowmarket forwards
were back in the Chelmsford half, five minutes later a kick
through by the Stowmarket flyhalf was caught on the bounce
by the full back for a converted try.
Chelmsford got back into the game, with their set scrum
putting pressure on the Stowmarket pack. With more
dominance Jamie Morrish was released for a try, well
converted by Ben Bayley. Stowmarket then went on the
attack and spent time in the Chelmsford half, they thought
the storm had been weathered, but it was a break away by
the Stowmarket winger which allowed them stretch their
lead to 17 – 7 at half time.

Two important incidents occurred just prior to half time,
firstly the authoritative figure of Josh Cavey the Chelmsford
captain had to leave the field, due to a leg injury and the
Stowmarket scrum half was given a red card due a dangerous
tackle.
Chelmsford made a quick score at the beginning of the half
when Jack Acorn was released for an unconverted try. By
now it was end to end rugby. Stowmarket replied with a try
following some excellent handling. Lloyd Ellis put Chelmsford
within one score of taking the lead again following excellent
inter play and handling. With less than ten minutes to go, it
was Chelmsford continuously on the attack, a dropped pass
with a metre to go, a head injury stoppage with the
Chelmsford on the attack all foiled Chelmsford’s efforts to
secure the win. From the subsequent scrum, under the
Stowmarket posts, the ball was lost which Stowmarket
managed to break away the length of the pitch which was
the final whistle. Chelmsford will be disappointed with this
loss, but will know that they can do better and on another
day the result could have ben different. Next week
