Woodford RFC v Chelmsford 1st XV

Rob Evans4 Dec 2022 - 13:20

Anglia Division 2

Before this game both teams were on the same number of points in the league table and Chelmsford had lost to Woodford at home in the first game of the season. On Saturday, however, Chelmsford put in an excellent performance, scoring six tries, four of which were converted, in a free flowing running manner with backs and forwards combining to score some outstanding tries.
As has been the case on a number of occasions this Chelmsford started slowly and after five minutes Woodford kicked to the corner and from the lineout drove over for an unconverted try. Chelmsford soon responded when Jack Acorn was given the ball following good handling in the backs to score in the corner. Chelmsford by now were spreading the ball across the pitch and back again, this handling created a gap which flyhalf Harry Moseley who sprinted through to score a try which he converted. The speed of the ball, passed through the hands and the quickness of the Chelmsford backs caused gaps in the Woodford defence and Jamie Ash was released on the wing to score before Lloyd Ellis burst through the centre to score. Woodford were still battling away especially close to ruck and maul and just before halftime reduced the deficit by scoring a converted try. Half Time; Woodford 12 Chelmsford 24
Chelmsford, again, did not start the second half well, a number of knock forwards and penalties allowed the talented Woodford kicker to pin the Chelmsford team back within their twenty two metre area and following a five metre lineout, Woodford drove over for a converted try.
Chelmsford were not daunted and continued to play their expansive game and scored two converted tries which both began deep in their own half. Firstly, after the ball had passed through at least a dozen sets of hands, Jamie Ash was released with men to beat and he went in score. Then, again after several quick passes, the ball was given to skipper Josh Cavey on the halfway line, he had potential tacklers all round him and supporting players who he could possibly pass. Selling more dummies than Mothercare he barrelled his way fifty yards to the try line to score a great try! Another forward drive in the closing stages allowed Woodford to score a final try but by then the result was never in doubt. Next week Chelmsford play top of the table team H.A.C. kick off 2.00pm
