Blue sky. Blueboys and Bluebirds watching. The clubhouse filled with 120 Chelmsford RFC guests at the end season 'Vice Presidents' luncheon. The stage was set for a good day.
Having beaten Rochford on the opening league Saturday in September, the return fixture saw a 'rejuvenated' side come to Coronation Park to try and ruffle a few feathers. The Blueboys had other ideas as the changing room vibe built before kick off. The atmosphere was charged as Chelmsford kicked up the slope but with the wind in the first half.
The opening score came within minutes as Rochford kicked out on he full and the resulting centre stage scrum won and Jack Lavin kicked for territory to the top left hand corner of the pitch. Centres Scott James and Lloyd Ellis were keen to spin the ball wide and a well floated pass saw Ash Toomey score the first try in the opposite corner. Chelmsford 5 Rochford 0.
The scoreboard 'ebbed and flowed' as both sides tried to gain dominance up front to secure good clean ball. The Rochford backs were also keen to play on a surface that was hard, dry and dusty. The rain of January and February seemed an age ago. With the backs still very industrious, Anup Ale and a brace from Noah Pyne saw the half time score - Chelmsford 26 Rochford 17
As the second half started the reshuffling of both sides had to take place. After a pushing and shoving match just before the break 13 Rochford players were now playing 14 from Rochford. Ash Browne was replaced by colt Adam Kelly for his 1st VX debut to much applause from the touchline. This seemed to 'rally' the visitor's who scored up the slope and wide on the left - Chelmsford 27 Rochford 22.
The next try would be crucial and this period of the game saw Chelmsford play with energy and real confidence. Lloyd Ellis splashed over for try five, Noah Pyne ran from his own 22 metre line for try six and Will Cooper scored a forwards pushover try that pleased the front row union. With all tries converted from the boot of Jack Lavin the score now read - Chelmsford 47 Rochford 31.
With legs starting to tire, Harry Moseley had entered the field at fly half and the Blueboys were still hunger to bring up the half century. Noah Pyne was still showing electric pace and another break found Ugo Eze thirty yards out. With ball in one hand Eze powered across the dust and scored under the posts. The final try of the game saw Rochford score at the death and as the referees whistle blew the score read - Chelmsford 54 Rochford 36. A great end to a frustrating season that might of been so much better had availability been more consistent
