Chelmsford intentions to keep playing open rugby cost them dear on the scoreboard
Chelmsford 10 Amersham 59
This was always going to be a difficult game for Chelmsford. Amersham are high flying in the league and Chelmsford still have a number of injured or unavailable players and lost Zane Manan in the warm-up with a torn hamstring.
Chelmsford started well playing down the slope and after pressure took the lead when Hoult slotted a penalty. This was the forerunner to Amersham taking the game by the scruff of the neck. During the game Amersham scored four tries from the five-yard lineout throws. It was from such a lineout that Amersham took the lead. Amersham’s talented backs then cut through twice to score tries, showing excellent handling skills before there was a response from Chelmsford
A response did come when Chelmsford applied concerted effort and Ben Bayley went over following a quickly taken penalty. To make the score 21-10 Chelmsford were in the game briefly, but the next five minutes, before half time were critical. Firstly, Chelmsford were running the ball and there was a handling error, the ball was split and the Amersham fly half ran the ball in from fifty yards. Secondly, David Hyett, the Chelmsford hooker got a red card following a tussle between the forwards. Half time Amersham 28-10
With only fourteen men on the pitch and playing up the slope, the game was always going to be a damage limitation exercise. To some extent this was not well executed and two of the five tries scored by Amersham in the second half occurred when the ball was mishandled by Chelmsford and Amersham gained the ball well inside the Chelmsford half. Kicking the ball to safety may have been a better option.
A feature of Amersham’s dominance was the kicking of conversion, seven of the nine tries were converted, often from a wide on the touchline. Even though there was little for the Chelmsford side to be pleased with, the performance of the seven Chelmsford forwards, particularly the front row was exceptional. Paul Redford, the Chelmsford skipper also worked as hard as ever, and had an excellent game.
It will be a day that Chelmsford will want to forget, Amersham played very well and are a well organised outfit. Coach Eddie Gooby will hope he has more of his players, who are currently injured, fit and available to play in future weeks.
