This was a game played with snow underfoot in blizzard like conditions. Prior to the game players and members of the Chelmsford Club cleared the snow from the lines and relined where required to allow the game to go ahead. Both sides contributed to an entertaining game played in the most difficult weather. Chelmsford only pulled away from Ipswich in the last quarter of the match.
Chelmsford always dominated in the set scrum throughout the match and it was from a five meter scrum when they drove Ipswich back for Will Cooper to score. After twenty minutes Chelmsford extended their lead when Zane Manan crashed over in the corner following an excellent break by Will Ferrier.
The game was hard fought with both sides handling being surprisingly good despite the wet freezing conditions. It was no surprise when Ipswich scored when their backrow crashed over after concerted pressure. Half Time 14-7
Chelmsford were now playing up the slope but with the strong wind and this proves decisive as both Manan and Arnott bombarded the opposition with searching kicks. This allowed Chelmsford to play the game in the Ipswich half for long periods. Chelmsford’s third try came following an excellent break from the base of the scrum by Pottinger before he fed Ross Toomey to score. Tom Day, the Chelmsford scrum half scored the next when he caught a knock down at the line out and took off with sixty meters to go. With the entire Ipswich defence bearing down on him, he evaded all to crash over.
In the last fifteen minutes, Chelmsford were well on top, with Nick Sani scoring from a rolling maul and Jack Acorn charging down a kick to score to score the sixth try. All of the tries scores were converted by Manan or Arnott. This win confirms Chelmsford’s continuing improvement and has taken them out of the relegation zone..
Director of Rugby Eddie Gooby said after the game what a day for the club the hard work by members and players produced a day to remember with a very important 42-7 win
Credit must go to the Ipswich Coaches players and supporters who travelled in testing conditions and played the in the true spirit of the game . They were all a credit to Ipswich Rugby Club
Gooby said the players were brilliant some of our play was outstanding in the conditions and it was a unbelievable way to send Presty off we owe him so much for the four years hard graft he has put in .
The players and squad should be proud of what they have achieved since Christmas .We have 3 cup finals left and hopefully we can finish the season off with a bang
