Chelmsford travelled to the Isle of Dogs looking to extend their unbeaten run. They started the game in poor style, dropping the kick off, missing tackles, giving away penalties and generally being off the pace of the game. When Millwall burst through to score a converted try it looked as though Chelmsford may have a difficult afternoon. But as in previous weeks the Chelmsford forwards started to dominate, Ed Wild kicked a penalty after fifteen minutes. As the half progressed Millwall’s set scrum could not withstand the pressure and gave away a penalty try. The lineouts were also working well, and following a ‘catch and drive’ the ball was released along the backs for Scott James to dot down. Chelmsford were now in full flow and an excellent kick ahead allowed Ed Wild to follow up and score. Chelmsford were now at their best and finding space all over the pitch, Mike Dawson receiving the ball at pace and jinking past several opponents to score a converted try. The second half began with the Chelmsford captain, Myles Reagan bursting through the Millwall defence to score a debut try after 7 seasons with the Club. Chelmsford were now having the majority of the ball and the backs were making good ground, some last ditch tackles prevented a number of tries but they could not stop Ed Wild going in for his second try. The last try of the day was probably the most spectacular, the ball was flung from the base of the breakdown hard and low, and 2nd row Alex Gardner picked up the ball at full pace managing to catch the ball around his boot laces. His momentum was such that he broke through several tackles to score an excellent try under the posts. With twenty minutes to go it looked as though Chelmsford would go on to score more tries but Millwall kept battling and Chelmsford started to lose possession, by trying to force the off load in every situation rather than keeping patient and going through the phases.
