This was a comprehensive victory in every respect, Chelmsford scored twelve tries, ten of which were converted by the reliable boot of Jordan Ayling and a remarkable four tries were scored by Jimmy Allway when he came on at half time. Kev Blackmore was in bouyant mood after the game:

"The first game back after Christmas is always a tricky one, but we asked the players to put in a big performance today, knowing it was an opportunity to close the gap on Epping and the players certainly did that. The loss to Braintree before the break hurt us, we came away from that knowing we didn't perform to our potential, but in an ironic way may just be the kick up the back side we needed. To score 12 trys and to shut them out was very satisfying. The lads were superb!"

Chelmsford played up the slope in the first half and it soon became obvious that Chelmsford were dominant both in the set scrum and lineout. It took just three minutes for Chelmsford to score when a driving maul led to Callum Booth going over. Next it was the turn for Marcus Pottinger to go over after good ball was won in the lineout. Jack Acorn, the teams leading try scorer, went in for the next try following excellent handling skills by the backs. The last try of the half was scored by Jordan Ayling who at fly half gave a dummy to make a break from sixty metres out and outran the entire Millwall defence.

At no time did Millwall give up and during the second half they had long periods of possession, the problem they had was that the Chelmsford tackling was always strong and Millwall did not have enough pace to be incisive out wide. The first try of the half was scored after fifteen minutes when Tom Alligan burst through at pace. Then Jimmy Allway scored his first try following a clever cross field kick. Paul Redford fed Jack Acorn for his second try. Jimmy Allway got involved all over the park, chasing kicks, working the blind side, scoring a further three tries. Ross Toomey who came on as a replacement showed considerable pace scoring a try straight down the middle and Joel Young got on the scoresheet for the final try.

This was an excellent start to the New Year for the Chelmsford side, but they will know, there are sterner opposition to face in future weeks. The strength of the squad is deep and there are a number of players coming back from injury or unavailability who will be fighting for places. Chelmsford remain second in the league, increasing their lead over the third place Campion and closing the points difference on first placed Epping to just 11 points.
