Chelmsford 48 22 King's Cross Steelers

Chelmsford secured a fine win against rugged opposition. The first half, when Chelmsford playing up the slope, was a close affair but in the first twenty minutes of the second half Chelmsford played some of their best rugby of the season and the game was taken away from the opposition.
Chelmsford did score first when the ball was relayed quickly to top try scorer Jack Acorn, who had several men to beat but backed his own ability to score a fine unconverted try. Kings Cross came back into the game with two identical tries. Penalties were given away by Chelmsford and Kings Cross kicked to the corner, where they caught and drove over the line. Harry Moseley reduced arrears with a well taken penalty. Chelmsford, who always had the upper hand in the set scrum, took the lead when Paul Redford scored from a push over try. As has been the case all season, Redford had an excellent game, making the hard yards whenever in possession. Chelmsford went further ahead when Scott James, who improves with every game, gathered the ball on the burst and blasted his way to score under the posts. Kings Cross still were hanging onto the game when they scored again from a five-yard lineout. Half time: Chelmsford 20 Kings Cross 17
Chelmsford scored four tries at the beginning of the second half in devastating style. Firstly, rapid relay of the ball saw Mike Dawson make a break before feeding the finisher, Jack Acorn. Then Dave Hyett made a break from a lineout who fed Josh Smith for his first try of the season. A break by Scott James was finished off by flanker Harry Thompson. Finally, David Hyett went over from five yards, after a period of considerable pressure. With the game won, a giddy Chelmsford lost some of their discipline and gave too many penalties away, which allowed Kings Cross score their fourth try.
Director of Rugby, Kev Blackmore, said of the team’s performance, “The players were superb today, it was a really strong performance against a very tough and competitive side. The lads had to dog it out playing up the slope in the first half but the message at half time was to back their skills, go out and play with freedom, and enjoy it. Then in the third quarter of the game they took it out of reach for the Steelers with some of the best rugby they’ve played all season. “
