Kings Cross Steelers 14 Chelmsford 44 London South East Essex 3

Chelmsford travelled to East London for their first league game of the season to face Kings Cross Steelers. Under very warm conditions it soon became obvious that Chelmsford’s preseason work with new forwards coach, Dave ‘Wobble’ Hyett had been invaluable and the Blue Boys were set to dominate both the set scrum and the lineout. After sustained pressure Chelmsford took the lead in just 3 minutes, when they were awarded penalty, kicked by Harry Moseley. Chelmsford then began to give away too many penalties which gave both ground and the opportunity for the Steelers to level the score through a penalty. Chelmsford regrouped and were soon back in the lead when quick ball from Warren Woodward, who had a particularly good game both in attack and defence, was fed out wide to Jack Acorn to score an unconverted try. Acorn was last season’s top point scorer for the club and looks set to continue his incredible record. From the kick off, influential centre Scott James made a good break to feed Jack Acorn for his second try. Chelmsford should have taken the game away from the Steelers there and then, but a number of handling errors with passes going astray allowed Steelers to gain a further penalty. Half time 13-6
After half time, penalty kicks were exchanged and the Steelers then scored their only try of the game, following a series of errors by Chelmsford, when the ball was spilled and tackles were missed and the Steelers’ winger went over for an unconverted try.
That try was enough to kick Chelmsford back into organised action and from that point on, Chelmsford dominated proceedings. The forwards rampaged towards the line and the ball was released to James, who crashed over for Moseley to convert from out wide. Harry Moseley had a good afternoon with the boot converting four tries and scoring two penalties. Scott James then repeated the try scoring process five minutes later with some excellent handling in the try scoring movement. With Chelmsford, now in the ascendancy, new signing Ryan Ashworth scored, when he gathered a kick from Woodward on the full to score in the corner. Finally, Jobi Fisher intercepted a pass some seventy metres out from the try line and sprinted over to score.
Kevin Blackmore the Director of Rugby was delighted with result, saying: “They almost beat us here last year so to win by thirty points was very pleasing, we have things to work on but we have a very good squad of players who work very hard”.
Next week Chelmsford travel to East London RFC, kicking off at 3pm.
