13 try rout on the road

Chelmsford traveled to Basildon on Saturday and in wet and blustery conditions they played some clinical rugby to overwhelm their opposition. As they have done all season the forwards dominated both scrummage and lineout and again gained quick ball from which they could launch attacks. In total Chelmsford scored thirteen tries of which Matt Jefferson converted six.

Chelmsford started the game at a brisk pace and had secured the bonus point for scoring four tries within twenty minutes of the kick off. The first three tries came from the forwards, the first by a catch and drive at a lineout by Paul Redford, then Marcus Pottinger crashed through the opposition, before Nick Crouch used his physique to plummet over the line. The fourth try was scored by Jack Acorn out on the wing, who scored five tries during the game, a remarkable achievement.

When Acorn was asked after the game ‘How was it that he scored so many tries?’ He said, ‘Really it’s just about the lads getting the ball to me with a bit of space and they were excellent today!!’

By half time Chelmsford scored eight tries, further four tries by Scott James, Nick Crouch and two more by Jack Acorn.

Basildon at no stage threw in the towel and deservedly scored a try just before half time following a short penalty.

Half time; Basildon 5 Chelmsford 48

The second half saw conditions deteriorate, never less Chelmsford showed good handling skills to put their backs in for a further five tries. The scorers; Acorn a further two tries, Jamie Ash an excellent try from a kick ahead and two tries for Scott James to make his hat trick of tries.

Whilst the backs once again scored the lions share of the try's, arguably, the Try of the game was left for a forward to dot down. After a series of offloads between players in the Basildon 22, Arran Goodridge crashed over for a splendid score.

Kev Blackmore DOR said of the performance "We played some superb Rugby in very challenging conditions." "Once again, the team grafted hard and were ruthless with the opportunities they created." "We were well ahead at halftime, but focused on sticking to our game plan and structures and the players executed brilliantly"

Full time time; Basildon 5 Chelmsford 77

Next week will see a blank Saturday due to the World Cup Final.

Next game on the 9th November will see Chelmsford take on Mavericks at Coronation Park k.o. 2.30
