Bonus point win keeps up pressure on leaders Harlow in tight title race

This was a comprehensive win over a side which Chelmsford had drawn with earlier in the season away from home. Chelmsford secured the extra bonus point by scoring their fourth try after only 23minutes of the game and when playing up the slope! The Cooperian forwards could not handle the rampaging runs of the backrow of Redford Pluck and Payne and although Chelmsford were playing with a number of changes in their front five, they still over powered the opposition in the set piece.

Chelmsford began their scoring after only a minute, when the ball was carried by the forwards for fifty meters before Jamie Ash was released to score without a hand being placed on him. Five minutes later, Ash was then on the end of a smart handling move to score a converted try.

During the match, Chelmsford scored nine tries and Callum McDonald, playing at fly half converted eight of them. His kicking from hand was good and his distribution of the ball was quick and decisive. He had an excellent game.

The third try, again came from the Chelmsford forwards making the hard yards, before releasing Scott James, to burst through to score. Jack Acorn then went onto score following some good handling by the backs and a well timed pass by Nick Crouch. The final try of the half came about following a crunch tackle by Henry Payne when possession was overturned and Ash was released to score his third try of the game

Half Time; Chelmsford 33 Old Cooperians 0

Chelmsford scored a further four tries during the second half, Scott James went on to score his second try. Tom Acorn got on the score sheet, scoring a try after a deft kick from James and an excellent catch and feed by Ash. Further tries were scored by Ash (his fourth try) and Acorn.

Chelmsford will be very happy with this win especially with their first half performance. They are still perched on top of the table with Harlow on equal points, both sides have some difficult game coming up in the next month.

Kev Blackmore, Director of Rugby said this of the performance "We drew with Old Cooperians back in October and hadn't performed to our potential in that game so new we could do better playing them at Home this time round" "We focused on the basics this week in training, but also emphasised playing with freedom and our heads up and I thought the lads did that superbly today!" "We scored some excellent tries and at times we looked unplayable as we really connected as a team" "A hugely pleasing aspect was that we were able to give 3 young players their first games in the league for the club. Leonard Jennings, Jack Morley and Ben Kennard all performed well when they came on the 2nd half. I dont often single out individual players, but Callum Macdonald, our man of the match, was outstanding today. He has had to bide his time for an opportunity but took it with both hands"

Next week Chelmsford travel to Barking kick off 2.30pm
