London NE 2

This was the final game of the season and it was a game, with the chances Chelmsford created, they should have probably won. Throughout the season a highlight of their game has been their handling and speed of passing, on a few occasions, this let them down on Saturday and their normal solid defence left a few holes which the talented Diss backs exposed.

Chelmsford got off to a bright start when after a few minutes of play some excellent handling by the Chelmsford backs released Jimmy Allway to score a fine try which Joel Young converted. Diss had their best part of the game during the next twenty minutes scoring three tries. The first came through a break by their centre, the second following a lineout close to the Chelmsford line and a Diss forward rumbled over. The third following a miss move in the centre which created a large hole in the Chelmsford defence which Diss went through to score. All their tries were well converted.

As has been the case on several occasions this season, too many penalties were given away, often in attacking positions by Chelmsford. Chelmsford during the course of the game lost three players with yellow cards, playing almost half the game with fourteen men takes its toll. Chelmsford reduced the deficit, when Josh Cavey bulldozed over for a converted try. Diss, then scored a very good try, exploiting the blindside causing an extra man who duly scored.

Half Time: Diss 28 Chelmsford 14

The second half began with bang, when Jack Acorn intercepted a pass from the Diss backs and ran untouched fifty metres to score. After twenty minutes Chelmsford reduced the deficit even further when the ball was thrown wide and Jimmy Allway went over. The rest of the half was somewhat of an anti-climax, both sides giving too many penalties away and receiving yellow cards. Diss did increase their lead when they successfully kicked a penalty.

Although this was a disappointing end to the season both players and coaches should be pleased with standard of rugby played and the spirit which has always been evident in the team throughout the season. The fact that fourteen of the eighteen players on the Chelmsford team sheet on Saturday had come through the junior ranks of the club is a great credit to coaching set up in the Youth and Mini Sections
