This was a remarkable win for the Chelmsford ‘Blue Boys’ as with two minutes to go they were trailing by ten points. At the end of the second half Chelmsford for the first time in the match got themselves entrenched in Southwold’s twenty two yard area and at last Scott James, as he has all season, caught the ball at pace and bludgeoned over for a converted try. What happened next was totally extraordinary, from the kick off Chelmsford dropped the ball backwards, the ball was thrown back wildly out to the backs, again it went on the floor before Jimmy Allway gathered the ball with the entire Southwold team in front of him and over eighty yards to the try line. He started to sprint forward and on at least five occasions Southwold players had their hands on him, he shrugged them off along his mazy run to finally score wide out. After the conversion there was no further play. Total elation and relief was displayed by both Chelmsford players and supporters alike.
Although Chelmsford won this match, it was in many ways, one of their most disjointed displays of the season. Again, they gave away far too many penalties, which the useful Southwold kicker used to good advantage. Many of these penalties in the set scrum. Winning their own ball in the lineouts proved to be hit or miss.

Chelmsford did take the lead after ten minutes, following an excellent kick ahead by Warren Woodward, which Jack Acorn sprinted onto to score to be converted by Joel Young. For the rest of the half, Chelmsford were under pressure and Southwold scored a penalty and a converted try to make the score 7 -10 at half time. Southwold, could have been further ahead had their handling been better.

At the beginning of the second half Chelmsford did take the lead 12-10, when a quick penalty was taken and Tom Acorn showing good hands and pace went through to score a try
Again, following a number of penalties, Southwold scored two tries when gaps were found in the Chelmsford defence, the last a penalty try when a high tackle was awarded as an attacker went to the line. This put Southwold ten points ahead until the last two minutes, before Chelmsford responded.

Chelmsford will want to play better next week despite their narrow win. On Saturday they meet Cantabrigians, who beat them away by two points earlier in the season. Kick Off 2.00
