This was a comprehensive victory for Chelmsford. The game was marred by indiscipline on both sides with Chelmsford spending almost an hour of the game with only fourteen men on the pitch. How Wanstead maintained a full squad on the pitch for the whole game was a mystery for many observers.

Chelmsford lost a player for ten minutes with a yellow card from the kick off for a high tackle and Wanstead went into the lead with a penalty. Chelmsford soon regained their composure when Scott James on the charge burst through four tackles to score an unconverted try. Chelmsford went further ahead after 20 minutes when close to the Wanstead line the ball was spilt by from the lineout and the ever alert Frankie Hart plunged over which Harry Moseley duly converted.
Throughout the game Chelmsford demonstrated how they could attack from anywhere on the pitch and involve the handling skills of both forwards and backs, the third demonstrated this where several players drove forward keeping the ball alive before George Wood got the ball to Jamie Ash to score a converted try.

Wanstead then scored a penalty. The move which brought about Chelmsford’s fourth try originated from slick handling inside their own twenty two, the gap was made and Jamie Ash showing his explosive speed went in to score from 60 metres. Chelmsford’s skipper Phil Dechamp was sent off just before half time for an off the ball incident.

Half time; Wanstead 6 Chelmsford 26.

The second half was an untidy affair, Chelmsford with only seven men in the scrum were under pressure in the set scrum, although scrum half, Ben Bayley tried to keep the ball alive whenever possible. The half was interspersed with many penalties but in the main Chelmsford’s defence was secure and with the ball in hand Chelmsford are always dangerous. Josh Smith went in for a try following concerted pressure. The home team did score a try when their talented No8 burst through from 40yards. Chelmsford had the last success when Jamie Morrish went through to score following another fine sequence of passing for Joel Young to convert.
