This was a game played in extreme conditions. There was a fierce wind blowing diagonally down the slope, often mixed with squally showers all played at a low temperature. Independent of the score both teams should be credited with playing such an entertaining game.
Playing down the slope the Wymondham flyhalf made excellent use of the wind and pinned Chelmsford back in their twenty two. After five minutes Wymondham took the lead when following a kick to the corner, the subsequent lineout was won by the visitors and a forward drive brought about a try which was well converted. Twenty minutes later Chelmsford fell further behind when the talented Wymondham prop drove over again from close range. A penalty was then converted. To make things worse for Chelmsford, in the final minutes of the half, an excellent break was made by the Wymondham centre to go in under the posts.

This made the halftime score Wymondham 24 Chelmsford 0.

It is doubtful that Chelmsford have ever come back to win from such a score. This Chelmsford team, however, is full of spirit and talent. Chelmsford were now playing down the slope and with the wind and within the first few minutes they had reduced the deficit when the ball was relayed at pace before Scott James plunged over for a try which Harry Moseley duly converted. Chelmsford continued to run the ball despite the conditions and they were again rewarded when Jack Acorn was released in space to show his speed to score in the corner.
Wymondham lost a couple of men through injury including their influential fly half but never stopped trying to make headway in the difficult conditions. Again, Chelmsford rather then kick for position, chose to allow their talented backs to be released and this time Jamie Ash showing his customary speed and guile went in to score under the posts. By now the Chelmsford forwards were also carrying the ball forward and gaining ground. Josh Cavey, the Chelmsford wing forward had an outstanding game and justifiably won the ‘Player of the Match’.
Chelmsford continued to run the ball, in terrible conditions and James went into level the score 24-24 with only minutes to go. Chelmsford, however are not a team to give up, and the ball was turned inside to Number 7, Cavey , who drove through three tackles before a well timed pass released Acorn who ran over for the fifth try and seal the game.
