Chelmsford won this game quite comfortably, fielding only six players who played the previous week, the players who came in will have caused Coach Kevin Blackmore plenty of headaches regarding selection for next week’s league game. Two of the under 21 team who played, Matt Jefferson and Joe Burton both made their mark on the game, Jefferson with his accurate kicking and good relay of the ball and Burton looked a real live wire when he came on in the second half.

Chelmsford made a good start, when a quick penalty left Maldon flat footed and Ross Toomey, showing excellent pace, went in from thirty metres for a converted try. Jack Acorn, then went in for his first of three tries during the game. Acorn, the man of the match, is playing as well as at anytime he has been wearing a Chelmsford shirt. He has real pace, and his team are giving him opportunities to go for the line.

Ben Franklin, coming from the second team, then staked his claim for regular inclusion in the 1st team with a good try. Acorn scored again before Henry Payne, a steadily improving player scored a try by barging over.

Maldon to their credit never gave up, and shortly before half time scored after some concerted pressure. Mike Dawson scored for Chelmsford on the half time whistle.

The second half was slightly disappointing for Chelmsford, their discipline was not good and they suffered a number of yellow cards, playing for many minutes with thirteen men. Maldon continued to threaten and deservedly scored another try early in the half. Chelmsford did score two more tries, firstly through a penalty try when Acorn going for his fourth try was high tackled as he was about to over the try line and Joe Burton darted over for his first try in the 1st team.
