First game of the season to blow the cobwebs away

Chelmsford U16’s travelled to Colchester for our first friendly game of the 2023/24 season. 19 boys travelled to the top-class facilities at Colchester Rugby Club in slightly cooler weather of late. Having heard the voices from outside the home team’s changing room, it was clear that Colchester were up for this game. Kick off was at 1100hrs and it would be fair to say that it was a rusty start for Chelmsford. Colchester dominated possession for most of the first half, and our boys rarely made it out of their own half. However, they defended well and after a very shaky lineout from Colchester, the ball was loose and was crying out for our Chelmsford player to dive on the ball and score a much needed first try of the game which was nicely converted by the number 10. Half time Score 0:7 (CRFC)

Second half saw a yellow card early on for Chelmsford, taking us down to 14 players. Fortunately, an awesome tackle from our debut player mid field, gave Chelmsford the opportunity to break away, with a nice little grubber kick that was chased down and a try was scored. Again, nicely converted for another 7 points on the board. No sooner had we gained our yellow card back, were we shown a second. Colchester continued to attack with passion, trying to maximise their advantage but Chelmsford’s defence was too good. Chelmsford saw just two more occasions to break away from the pressure, which resulted in two more brilliant tries from the team, securing a further 10 points on the board. Final whistle was blown, Final Score 0:24 (CRFC)

The win was well deserved, with every single player displaying sheer determination in defence and some moments of brilliance that secured the points – however we have a lot to take away from the game. I have no doubt that the training sessions coming up will be dedicated to practicing lineouts, scrums and handling skills which were all areas that require improvement.
It was good to see some players who are out through injury, also make the journey to watch and support their team mates.

A great start to the season blueboys…
