A game played with passion and with an extra special reason to do CRFC proud.

This week, Chelmsford U16’s travelled to Braintree for a second friendly match of the season. 20 boys made the journey to play rugby in what turned out to be very blustery conditions. We were treated to the 1st team pitch right in front of the club house which is always a bonus! It was great to see so many teammates and supporters also make the journey to watch the game, which reflects the closeness and commitment of the team, from both players and parents alike.
Kick off was at midday, and within 7 minutes, CRFC conceded a try. The wind worked in our favour, and the kicker was unable to convert. CRFC fought back and made some key tackles to regain control of the ball and at 18 minutes, CRFC equalled the score with a great try out wide from the number 15. Sadly, the wind scuppered our plans too, and the conversion missed its target. Braintree showed some good handling skills, and their lineouts were working well, and at 22 minutes, they scored again, this time in a much better position for the conversion, which sailed through the sticks. Just before the half time whistle, CRFC broke free and touched down over the line, which was successfully converted by our Number 10. Half time Score 12/12.
The second half saw a yellow card early on for Chelmsford for a high tackle, taking us down to 14 players. Fortunately, the team stayed focussed and in control, consistently answering any questions that Braintree had for us. We were by far the stronger team in the 2nd half and had great success with our driving mauls, gaining metres where it counted. No sooner did our Yellow card return to the field, the Ref showed a yellow to a Braintree player for the same reason. CRFC made the most of this advantage and were able to put 2 further tries over the line, with one conversion in the final quarter of the game. Final whistle was blown, Final Score 12:24 (to CRFC) The coaches were pleased to have a good win but we have work to do with our lineouts. This is the first year these have been contested, and with injuries taking out some key players, our options are limited and we’re vulnerable in this area.
This was a hugely significant game today. The team were told the terribly sad news that our beloved friend and coach Paul McManus passed away yesterday (23/09/2023). His wife and Son were bravely present at the game, and whilst there are no words or actions that could lessen their pain and grief, the love and support on show from the parents and children of this team was incredibly powerful. The boys did themselves and the club proud, and the team showed what it means to be part of this rugby family. Thanks to Braintree RFC for their understanding and support today. Some Braintree boys took the time to speak to our boys and offer their condolences. Today saw the true rugby spirit that Paul truly believed in. Paul - you were a huge character and will be sorely missed by us all.
