A close game in muddy conditions sees Chelmsford edge out their hosts to win 21-25.

After a foggy start to the morning the fog lifted and blue sky appeared momentarily.

With so many games cancelled due to poor pitch condition and all home fixtures off the Crusader Colts travelled to Burnham on Crouch to play a rearranged Div 2 fixture. Originally this was due to be played 17 March, but Burnham kindly agreed to bring the fixture forward so both teams can have extra game time that is much needed.

On a soft pitch next to the sea wall the game was played in good spirit and fairly refereed throughout in an entertaining game that either side could have finished on top. As it was on this occasion the Blue Boys ran out winners by five unconverted tries to three converted tries.

The game started brightly on a heavy muddy ground with long grass making running a real challenge.
Chelmsford tested the home team for periods and were rewarded with three unanswered tries by stretching the home team defence and making them work hard.

Burnham to their credit never gave up and were in the game and unlucky not to have scored in the first half. When Burnham started working out the Chelmsford play, they started to make gains in the Chelmsford half. Burnham are a young side who are well coached by their experienced coaching partnership of Dan Hull and ex Chelmsford player and coach Smithy.

The second half was better for the home team as they started to attack and scored three well worked tries of which the best was a chip kick and chase to gather and dot down between the posts with the Chelmsford defence knapping. Burnham also had the better kicker on the day who made a fine kick from the touchline where Chelmsford could not kick one conversion.

Well done to everyone involved today and to those that came to support the lads from Chelmsford.
Well done to the new lads Leon and William on their Chelmsford debuts and to the returning players, some haven’t played due to injury for 13 months.
Lastly thank you to Burnham for being very accommodating and good hosts as always.
Next weekend the Colts squad are on the road again this time to Saffron Walden for a training/development game.
See you all on the training paddock weather permitting on Thursday.
