Chelmsford Ladies 14 - 36 Wasps FC Amateur Women

The Bluebirds first home game of 2024 saw the visit of Wasps FC Amateur Women with the home side looking to build on a fine performance last time out. Starting up the slope in the first half the Bluebirds quickly got into their stride with some strong attacking and defensive play in the opening exchanges. It was Wasps Women who opened the scoring with a sniping try from their captain before adding a second shortly after with another strong runner breaking through the Bluebirds defence, both converted to give the away side a 14-0 lead. The Bluebirds continued to dig deep but were again undone by some excellent handling by Wasps FC and 2 further tries followed, this time unconverted to give the visitors a 24-0 lead at half time.

Now playing down the slope, and with Wasps FC down to 14 after a yellow card for the Wasps scrum half just before half time, the Bluebirds came out strongly, with Ellie Lawther adding to her season tally with a fine tap and go snipe from 40 meters out to dot down under the posts, quickly followed by a second in similar fashion to bouy the Bluebirds and put the Wasps Women on the back foot - both tries converted by captain Jess Matthews to reduce the deficit to 14-24.

As the game wore on the Bluebirds dug in looking for a further score to reduce Wasps FC lead down, but a couple of late breakaway tries by the visitors, one converted saw the away team come away with a 14-36 victory and a full 5 points as they look to compete with the other league leading sides. A great effort by the Bluebirds with some great performances across the squad but sadly coming up short against a strong and well drilled Wasps FC Amateur Women side.

The Bluebirds are back in action on the 28th January when they travel to Chesham Ladies and look to bounce back to winning ways. Any support always greatly appreciated, especially when the ladies are away from home!
