Plenty of positives from a last day defeat on the road

It was always a big ask of the Bluebirds as they travelled to Twickenham (not the stadium unfortunately) to face second-placed Thamesian Women in their last league game of the season. With the squad stretched thin due to injuries and availability, the Bluebirds called on reinforcements from Southend Ladies to bolster the team and get the game played in the South West London sunshine. Despite a strong opening five minutes of possession, the Bluebirds were unable to convert into points and soon found themselves 2 converted tries down within 15 minutes. More dominant running from a youthful Thamesians side saw them run in a steady succession of individually worked tries to head into the break in a strong position, securing the bonus point they needed to have any chance of catching league leaders Sudbury.

The 2nd half however couldn't have been more different. Like the week before, the Bluebirds woke from their slumber to instantly hit back through some fine work by the forwards, allowing flanker Sophia Richardson to crash over for the Bluebirds first score of the day, ensuring they completed the season having scored at least 1 try in every game! This was duly converted by Vice Captain Jess Matthews to reduce the deficit to 36-7. Chelmsford Ladies continued to dominate, moving the ball well through the backs and putting Thamesian Women under a ton of pressure when they didn't have possession, allowing for more chances to score. With continued dominance in the scrum, the Bluebirds scored an excellent team try having moved the ball across the back line, and some deft hands from full back Brenda Stubar setting up winger Lily Ryley to score in the corner. Thamesian Women 36-Chelmsford Ladies 12. Another comeback on the cards?

Alas no! With the rest of the half remaining scoreless, the comeback unfortunately wasn't on for a second week running but it was a 2nd half performance to be proud of by the Bluebirds, finishing strong having conceded no tries in the final 40 minutes of the season and leaving Thamesians thankful for the final whistle to finally blow. Well done to Thameisans on a deserved win and look forward to playing them again next season. Big shout out to our 3 lovely Southend ladies for stepping in to help us out - Keshia, Callie and Gemma, you all smashed it!!

Finally, thanks again to all the family and friends who came along to support us and to all of those within the club who have helped and supported the Bluebirds throughout the season. Most importantly thanks to all the lovely Bluebirds who have pulled on the jersey this season, wishing our injured warriors a speedy recovery and look forward to seeing the squad back together better and stronger next season.
